In the fifth round of the 28th National Cricket League (NCL), Chattogram have moved to the brink of their second win of the season, leaving themselves a strong position against Sylhet. Playing at their home ground, Chattogram need 101 more runs in the second innings with nine wickets in hand to chase down a target of 227. At the close of the third day's play, Chattogram were 126 for one. Nine wickets in hand and 101 runs required is a scenario that clearly favours the home side, though a single early breakthrough on the fourth-morning pitch could alter the equation.

The biggest link in this match was Sylhet's second innings, which folded for 218. Not a single Sylhet batter could reach the fifty-run mark, which on one hand was the result of sustained pressure from Chattogram's bowlers and on the other indicates that the pitch was not an easy one for batting. If Sylhet's first-innings lead was only eight runs, it is clear that Chattogram's first innings was also modest and that the entire contest was low-scoring, tight and result-oriented — a healthy sign for first-class cricket.

At the centre of Chattogram's position was left-arm spinner Hasan Murad, who claimed four wickets in Sylhet's second innings. Those four wickets proved to be the most decisive turn of the match, because by restricting Sylhet to 218 they left Chattogram with a limited and achievable target. Left-arm orthodox spin is considered a relatively scarce variety in Bangladesh's spin stocks, since off-spin and wrist-spin have dominated at the top level. Consistent performances of this kind in domestic first-class cricket could therefore draw the attention of the national red-ball selectors. A clear caveat is necessary here, however: this is the data of a single innings, and no detailed information such as bowling average, economy or spell length is available. Reading it as a 'national-team-ready' conclusion would therefore be premature.

Besides Hasan Murad, Md Rubel and Md Ashraful Hasan took two wickets each. This distribution of wickets — four to a spinner and two each to the seamers — shows that Chattogram's bowling unit did not depend on one individual but was balanced and varied. This combination of pace supported by spin was what kept breaking Sylhet's innings.

While chasing, Chattogram's start wobbled — Mahmudul Hasan Joy was dismissed for only 17. The cheap dismissal of a national-team batter would have been a worry at that moment, but Sadikur Rahman (58) and Md Shah Poran Sohel (51) put together an unbeaten 91-run stand to carry the team almost to a safe harbour. The unbeaten half-centuries of both batters are evidence that they showed both patience and technique in a difficult situation — a positive marker in first-class cricket. Even so, one innings is not a representative sample of a batter's form; without season-level averages it would not be appropriate to read too much into these performances.

The interesting contradiction is that while the national-team regular fell cheaply, two lesser-known domestic batters anchored the innings. This is a reminder that national-team form should not be read directly off domestic scorecards — nor should Joy's 17 be treated as 'form lost', because one innings in a low-scoring match yields no conclusion.

The other three fixtures of NCL Round 5 also appear relatively balanced and headed towards results. Mymensingh, following on against Khulna, reached 315 for nine thanks to Al-Amin Jr.'s 102. Khulna are still ahead, but Al-Amin Jr.'s century and the resistance shown under follow-on pressure are keeping the contest alive. For Khulna, Sheikh Parvez Jibon took four wickets and Soumya Sarkar three — Sarkar's contribution with the ball is notable because he is primarily regarded as a white-ball batter, and this red-ball contribution is an indication of his all-round value. This too should be viewed only as a single data point.

In the Barishal-Dhaka match being played at Rajshahi's venue, Barishal reached 266 for eight on the back of Md Abdullah's unbeaten 62 and captain Iftakhar Hossain Ifti's 47. For Dhaka, leg-spinner Aminul Islam Biplob claimed three wickets.

In the Rajshahi-Rangpur match in Bogura, Rangpur made 256 in their first innings with Anik Sarker's 75 and Iqbal Hosen's 70, in reply to which Rajshahi fell 25 runs behind in the first innings. Rajshahi then extended their lead to 85 runs courtesy of captain Pritom Kumar's unbeaten 41. The biggest individual performance of this match was Asaduzzaman Payel's five-wicket haul, which is clearly the only five-for recorded in this round and the strongest bowling return of the round. The impact of Payel's five-for is, however, somewhat diluted by the fact that Rajshahi trailed on the first innings.

To understand the NCL, one basic point must be made clear — this is Bangladesh's domestic first-class tournament, in which eight divisional teams take part. It is not a franchise-based T20 league, and its value lies not in broadcast revenue or auctions but in the sport and the talent pipeline. Al-Amin Jr.'s century, Payel's five-for and Hasan Murad's four wickets are exactly the kind of performances that justify the tournament's existence. Parallel matches in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi and Bogura in a single round also show that the depth of all eight divisions is being tested simultaneously.

Finally, three warnings are essential. First, this report rests entirely on a single source and none of the figures has been independently verified, so all data should be treated as 'reported, verification pending'. Second, Chattogram's win is highly likely but not mathematically secure — a single spell on the fourth-day pitch could change the course of the match. Third and most important, one innings' performance by any player should not be presented as a 'new star'; only season-level data are the real indicator.
